EU Imposes New Tariffs on Imports from the U.S. – What Companies Need to Know

New EU tariffs on U.S. goods begin April 2025. Find out which sectors are affected and how Gerlach Customs supports your import operations.

Summary

On 14 April 2025, the European Commission introduced new retaliatory tariffs on a wide range of U.S. products. This action comes in response to U.S. import duties on EU steel, aluminium, and cars. The EUโ€™s goal is to defend its economic interests while keeping the door open for future cooperation.ย

Some products will face 10% to 25% extra duties. Others are temporarily excluded from tariffs until 14 July 2025, giving businesses limited time to prepare. These changes will affect many sectors, including agriculture, food, consumer goods, and manufacturing

Who Is Affected?

The new EU tariffs target a broad list of U.S. goods such as:

  • Agricultural productsย
  • Processed foods and drinks
  • Steel and aluminium
  • Tools, machinery parts, and vehicles
  • Textiles and cosmetics

The extra duties start from 15 April 2025 and will expand step-by-step until December 2025. The exact products and customs codes are listed in the official regulations (see links below).

Key Datesย

  • 15 April 2025 โ€“ First group of new duties appliesย
  • 16 May 2025 โ€“ More products addedย
  • 1 December 2025 โ€“ Final group of products affectedย
  • Until 14 July 2025 โ€“ Some items are temporarily excluded from tariffsย
