CITES stands for Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild, which is better known by the term “Washington Convention.” CITES is an treaty signed in 1973 to protect endangered plats and species. Internationally, the treaty came into force in 1975.
CITES regulates international trade in protected animal and plant species for 181 countries worldwide. It currently contains around 5000 animal and 29,000 plant species. By controlling exports and imports, the survival of protected animals and plants are assured.
