BAFA (Federal Office of Economics and Export Control)
What does BAFA mean?
BAFA means the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control in Germany. It is a higher federal authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy, which also performs tasks for other federal ministries. In the fields of energy, the BAFA performs important administrative tasks for the federal government. A core task of the authority is export control, which is in the area of foreign trade.
The BAFA must always be informed if it is already known that the final country of destination is not only outside the EU but also the goods to be delivered are intended for nuclear purposes. Even if the country of destination is Iraq, Iran, Israel, Libya, Syria, Algeria, Pakistan, Jordan or North Korea, it is mandatory to inform the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control. The BAFA then decides whether the delivery of the goods requires a license.
